People think expensive vendors deliver better quality. Actually, vendors who deliver quality can charge more because they've invested in support, documentation, and calibration infrastructure. The causation runs the other way.

Checkpoint: If your TCO spreadsheet shows a non-Tektronix brand saving >30% over 5 years, it's worth considering. If less than that, stick with the established option for reliability.

Step 5: Choose the Right Purchase Channel

Direct from Tektronix is fine. Authorized distributors can give better pricing and support. Gray market or eBay for used gear? Tempting, but proceed carefully.

Trap 1: Buying too much scope. A 1 GHz oscilloscope costs 2-3x a 200 MHz one. If you're measuring 50 MHz signals, you don't need 1 GHz. You need probes rated for 50 MHz. Save the money for something else.

Trap 2: Ignoring the probe budget. Probes often cost 10-30% of the scope cost. Under-spec'd probes ruin measurements. Over-spec'd probes waste money. Match probes to your application — not just by frequency, but by voltage and impedance requirements.

Trap 3: Forgetting about compliance. If you're in automotive, medical, or aerospace, your tests must follow standards (ISO 17025, etc.). That means calibration traceability, certified procedures, and documented acceptance criteria. A $3,000 scope without accredited calibration is worthless for compliance. Budget accordingly.

Trap 4: Buying software separately. Some Tektronix software is included. Some is paid. Always ask what's included in the quote. A $200 software upgrade included upfront is cheaper than buying it later for $400.
